’80s Teen Comedy CAVEGIRL Gets Roebuck BTS Doc and Remaster from Code Red

CAVEGIRL original VHS release posterProlific film and TV actor Daniel Roebuck (JOHN DIES AT THE END, THE FUGITIVE) has given FilmEdge the exclusive scoop on a pet project of his: the DVD revival of his first feature film, CAVEGIRL, due later this year from Code Red DVD.

The 1985 pre-hysterical teen comedy is getting treated like a gem thanks to Roebuck, who retains an undying fondness for his debut film. “I know it would make no sense to most people in Hollywood, but as crappy as the movie is I have a deep affection for it because we had a great and crazy time making it and, without it, I would not have moved on to the rest of my career,” Roebuck commented. Indeed, the actor/filmmaker is creating several new bonus features for the DVD including an all-new documentary on the production, a cast audio commentary and something called a “2 1/2-D” viewing experience. The press release below explains all:

TEEN CULT COMEDY “CAVEGIRL” RETURNS WITH NEW BONUS FEATURES
IN REMASTERED DVD SCHEDULED FOR RELEASE IN LATE 2013

BURBANK, Calif. (May 9, 2013) — Most actors go to great pains to distance themselves from early and unflattering work but Daniel Roebuck, one of Hollywood’s busiest character actors, is meeting his “demons” head on! Roebuck, a thirty year veteran of show business, has amassed an impressive resume starring in blockbuster films (THE FUGITIVE), horror movies (HALLOWEEN 2), family pictures (AGENT CODY BANKS) and on television (LOST). His first movie, however, may have been his worst — CAVEGIRL.
In what will surely be an unprecedented home video experience, Code Red DVD and actor/director Daniel Roebuck are collaborating to present an extremely intimate look at the making of this 1980’s teenage sex comedy in Roebuck’s latest documentary, CAVEGIRL: A SECOND JOURNEY BACK IN TIME.
“I know it would make no sense to most people in Hollywood, but as crappy as the movie is I have a deep affection for it because we had a great and crazy time making it and, without it, I would not have moved on to the rest of my career,” Roebuck commented recently from his Burbank home.
The DVD release, scheduled for later this year, will offer fans of the movie (yes, there seem to be a few) a remastered print of the film along with Roebuck’s new documentary, a DVD audio commentary track plus a third special feature, CAVEGIRL 2 ½-D.
The filmmaker explains, “It was our intention to really think out of the box on this, within the budget constraints and the clear understanding that this movie isn’t Citizen Kane. The 2 ½-D means that viewers will have a chance experience CAVEGIRL in two-and-a-half dimensions because we couldn’t afford all three! They can listen to the audio commentary while watching the film OR watch a separate audio-visual, very silly presentation that will include the running commentary as well as photos, videos and a few more surprises.”
Both CAVEGIRL: A SECOND JOURNEY BACK IN TIME and CAVEGIRL IN 2 ½-D will reunite Roebuck with many members of the original cast including Jeff Chayette, Saba Moor-Doucette, Sydni King Taylor, Bill Adams, Stacey Q and Bill Sehres.
Daniel Roebuck’s other documentaries include HALLOWEEN: THE HAPPY HAUNTING OF AMERICA, MONSTERAMA and the upcoming DOCTOR SHOCKER’S VAULT OF HORROR.
CAVEGIRL: A SECOND JOURNEY BACK IN TIME will be directed by Roebuck and he will produce it with David Hansen-Sturm and Jesse Adams. Grace Roebuck and Tim E. Goodwin are associate producers and William Olson is serving as Executive Producer.
