“I’m pleased and happy to repeat the news that we have, in fact, caught and killed a large predator that supposedly injured some bathers. But, as you see, it’s a beautiful day, the beaches are open and people are having a wonderful time. Amity, as you know, means friendship.”
So says Murray Hamilton‘s Mayor Vaughn just before the shark’s 4th of July beach buffet in Steven Spielberg‘s 1975 summertime thriller JAWS, a film that defined the modern blockbuster. As part of its 100th Anniversary Celebration, Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release JAWS for the first time on high-definition Blu-ray disc August 14th, including a full digital restoration and remastering of Spielberg’s first hit film and over four hours of bonus features. The JAWS Blu-ray Combo Pack includes the feature film on hi-def Blu-ray and DVD discs plus Digital Copy and UltraViolet versions for viewing at the beach on your portable devices with fully restored picture and 7.1 surround sound.
Shaping pop culture and practically inventing the idea of the summer blockbuster, JAWS stars Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw as a trio of complexly motivated characters who must hunt down a great white shark killing swimmers off the beaches of Amity Island. Producers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown purchased the film rights to Peter Benchley‘s 1974 novel before it was published and became a best-seller lasting 44 weeks on the charts. Composer John Williams earned an Academy Award for his iconic, tension-building original score, and JAWS earned two more Oscars® for Best Editing and Best Sound. JAWS became a pop culture sensation in its 1975 theatrical release, quickly breaking box office records to become the first film to earn over $100 million and the highest-grossing film of its era.
In celebration of the Fourth of July, FilmEdge offers our complete listing of Blu-ray features including the all-new documentary The Shark is Still Working, plus trailers, film clips and a featurette on the restoration of JAWS so you can experience this landmark thriller as you’ve never seen it before.
