Michael Giacchino to score JOHN CARTER OF MARS

MovieScore Magazine has confirmed that newly-minted Oscar winning composer Michael Giacchino is set to score Andrew Stanton‘s sci-fi epic JOHN CARTER OF MARS.

Giacchino’s award-winning score for Best Animated Feature UP continued the composer’s relationship with Disney, which now extends with his first live-action film for the studio.  He certainly has the space-faring chops for film scores, having provided the stirring music for STAR TREK as well.

Stanton, the director of Disney/Pixar smash hits WALL-E and FINDING NEMO, is currently shooting his big budget adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel series which began with A Princess of Mars.

Set in the wounded planet of Mars, JOHN CARTER OF MARS chronicles the journey of Civil War veteran John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who finds himself battling a new and mysterious war amidst a host of strange Martian inhabitants, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins).

The all-star cast also includes Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Bryan Cranston and Thomas Hayden Church.  JOHN CARTER OF MARS is scheduled to launch into theaters in 2012.
